No, I’m not talking about the Britney Spears song. Although it is a catchy earworm kind of song that reminds me of being in Europe… but I digress.
I’m referring to the toxic burden that you might be carrying in your body as you read this. Dun dun dun! Before you freak out on me, It’s not my intention to alarm you, but rather to empower you to make some simple swaps to help your body lower it’s toxic load and help you on your health journey!
Unfortunately, our world is just filled with substances that are harmful to our health and we ingest, inhale, and absorb a lot of these chemicals, additives, and synthetic compounds daily without much thought to the impact they have on our bodies. This is partially because the FDA has recognized them as safe or has done little to no research on their safety, and most of us assume that if it’s on the shelf, it’s safe, right? [WRONG] It’s not that the FDA is out to harm us necessarily, it’s just that the scope of what we’re looking at here is so large it’s difficult to manage. Plus, any individual compound might be safe in small amounts individually, but when you aggregate months and years of exposure to that individual compound along with hundreds of thousands of other compounds daily… it’s a lot for your body to process. And in today’s society, we are exposed to an insane number of toxins today via pollution, in our food supply, water supply, medications, cosmetics, and home cleaning products (BioRay Kids has a great summary as it relates to this on their website). The issue with ingesting/absorbing/inhaling these compounds is that your body doesn’t recognize it and your liver must neutralize them to escort them out of the body before it can do any harm.
So what am I talking about here? Well, you know I’m a big proponent of label reading when you go to the grocery store – avoiding any unpronounceable ingredients, or any compound that you wouldn’t find in nature. Same thing goes for your personal care products – in general, if you wouldn’t eat it you shouldn’t put it on your skin – because everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream. They have awesome guides that help you navigate this whole environmental toxin issue – ranging from food additives to cosmetics (be sure to check out their Skin Deep Database) to cleaning supplies, water, farming, and more. I am so grateful for the work they do!
This is such a personally important topic to me, as I recently found out that I have a gene mutation that essentially makes it more difficult for my body to process out toxins and other waste products. This situation is part of the reason why my periods were so irregular – my toxic load was so high (from poor dietary and lifestyle choices in my early 20’s) that my body couldn’t process out the hormones it needed to in order for my cycles to flow appropriately. So, by minimizing my toxic load on things I had control over, my body was able to get back into normal, healthy delicate balance and respond to the hormones as it should.
So, I highly encourage you to make one simple swap – either in your food, personal care products, or cleaning products today! Just don’t freak out on me and throw everything away… think small sustainable changes – when a toxic product runs out, replace it with a healthier choice.
